1920 Wilkanowski Violin

1920 Wilkanowski Violin

This violin was made by the famed William Wilkanowski of Brooklyn, NMY sometime in the 1920s or perhaps the 1930s. Wilkanowski was known for prodigious violin production at the time, but better known in the last few decades for one of his guitars, which we were the first to find and recognize as such, back in the 1970s. It was a most unusual instrument, in an unusual shape and with mother-of-pearl trim, and we restored it, put it on display in our store, and it was bought by June Carter as a birthday gift for her husband, Johnny Cash. This violin has the typical stylized “W” worked into the purfling of the back at the heel of the neck, indicating the maker. It is of full size, and has beautifully flamed maple back and sides and a flamed maple neck. There is one small top crack near the bass F-hole, and no other cracks. Its case is original, not usable. It is in need of setup and is offered as is at $895 w/xohsc
