1934 Gibson L-75

1934 Gibson L-75

The sign painter’s art, a true American art form and an iconic one. Remember the SALE! signs hand-painted on paper in grocery store windows back in the 1950s and earlier, gorgeous and thrown away immediately after use? It’s a long-gone skill, though it’s truly art, and stunning art at that. Here it is on a 1930s Gibson guitar that got taken overseas during WW II, applied by someone’s local sign painter in a small town, for a local GI somewhere in America, on his way to and from war. Stunning “shadow lettering” script of “Hawaii” and “Okinawa” on the front; “Okinawa / Shima / 193 BN” and a likeness of an M-4 Sherman tank on the back, with all that and more on the case, including the owner’s name, Emmett H. Atkinson. You just can’t find things like this unless you stumble upon them, and I consider myself fortunate to have done so and to have been able to preserve it all these years. I sincerely hope that its next owner will treasure and respect it as much as I have. The guitar is quite playable and quite intact; the case has seen better days and is all the more wonderful for it. Offered as is. $2995 w/ohsc
