19th Cent Josephus

19th Cent Josephus

A mid-19th century French guitar, probably from the 1840s-50s, with stunningly engraved mother-of-pearl border around the entire top. The interior label has  Joannes Josepus / Derazey 18__  printed on it. The rosette is inlaid in a similar manner to the top but in a considerably fancier pattern, engraved, and set into mastic, as is the peghead overlay with a beautiful floral pattern; the bridge is as well, covered with engraved mother-of-pearl flowers, The back and sides are of birds-eye maple; the top, which is bound in genuine ivory, is of spruce. The back, also bound in ivory, has come loose along one side; all back braces are present. The slotted peghead has tuning machine not original to the guitar. Has its original form-fitted, felt-lined wooden case; latches and one hinge intact, one hinge missing. A very rare find outside of a museum today; this guitar has not been on the market in over forty years. Offered as is at $4000
