1918 Gibson A-4 Mandolin

1918 Gibson A-4 Mandolin

Sigh. Simeone is going to get a terrific bargain here. This 1918 Gibson A-4 mandolin, one of their very top models of the day, has seen some use, an embarrassment or two, and some heroic repairs in its 102-year lifetime, and it’s just looking for a new home. The current owner has had it for over forty years and has this to say: "I got it in 1978 or so at a garage sale. It was good and playable. I loaned to an idiot at one time to record with and he brought it back with a big I'm Sorry…”. Since then, it was thoroughly repaired years ago and is strong and tight, though the repairs do show. There are a couple of top cracks and one back crack, all nicely done, some finish work on the top, with the most noticeable work having been done on the sides, near the neck block and tail block. It’s all solid though, just shows its heritage. Quite happily, it sounds terrific, big and bold and incredibly punchy with amazingly fine low and mid-ranges, like the best of these have. The frets are in great shape, showing that it just hasn’t been played much at all. The action is a bit low, could use a slight raising of the bridge to get all its notes to sound correctly. This 1918 Gibson A-4 is being offered "as is" at literally a fraction of what A-4s of this period commonly bring. It still has its original Gibson hard shell case too. Only $995 w/ohsc
