1944 Martin 00-21
This 1944 Martin 00-21 is a one-owner guitar, in storage for more than twenty years. It has all the right pre-war Martin stuff: scalloped braces; ebony fingerboard and original ebony bridge; original ivory saddle, never cut, action height exactly where Martin set it at the factory in 1944. No neck reset, never needed one. The original nut was gone and so we replaced it with a genuine ivory one from another older Martin, from our fifty-year-plus parts collection. Frets totally gone over by us and feel just great. You can play this Martin beautifully lightly or you can really get into it and it’ll give right back to you by the ton, most unusual for one of these. Width at the nut is the standard Martin 1-7/8”, very traditional Martin neck contour, and it’s extremely comfortable to play.
Best best part, it has all the unmatchable tone and volume that can come from nowhere else on earth but a pre-war, Brazilian rosewood 12-fret Martin. Period. Big clear warm trebles matched up with terrific midrange and plenty of clean bass for balance. Tuners typical of the day, looks like there was a different set of similar type on there at one point. One very light coat of varnish on the back of the neck, nearly impossible to detect, can barely see it and certainly can’t feel it. Two well-repaired (by us) back cracks, some mild finish oddities on the lower back and around the end plate though thankfully none of this on the money side. Teeny little squoosh of the spruce at the lower treble bout, inconsequential and totally solid. Entire guitar completely gone over by us 100% and in 100% structural condition.
And it chords beautifully in tune all up and down the neck, something we’ll encounter only a very few times in our lives, ever, and this cannot be adjusted into a guitar; it either has it or it doesn’t, and this Grand Concert Martin surely does. Overall, a heartthrob for a lifetime. Comes with modern molded Dreadnaught case, a bit large but this is what it came in with. $8995 w/hsc
