1961 Martin 00-21NY

The 00-21 was Martin’s original entry into the Grand Concert-size category, in the early 1870s, and the model was made without interruption until the 1980s, quite a run. In the early 1960s, in order to take advantage of the emerging folk boom, Martin came out with a variation that capitalized on the “New York Martin” talk that was going around, calling it the 00-21NY. The differences were: no pickguard, plain fingerboard with no inlay, a straight bridge rather than a belly-type one, and a satin finish instead of gloss, which a lot of folks turned out to love. This beautiful and very cool version was offered for five years and only about 900 were made; it’s rare to come across a really nice one today. I have here a beautiful one in terrific condition; there is one small finish check near the bottom of the top and that’s it. The action is easy and low, and the original ivory saddle and nut are present, neither of which have ever been touched or trimmed. The tones, which come from its combination of Brazilian rosewood and the proportions of the original 12-fret 00-size Martin design, are as warm and clear and balanced as one could ever hope for. A perfect Martin guitar. $4995 w/hsc
